Waiting ...

With apologies to Rupert Holmes and anyone who wants words to rhyme!

I was tired of my President
We'd been together too long
Like a worn-out recording
Of a favorite song
So while he was out there canvassing
I read the paper in bed
And in the political columns
There was this article  I read

"If you like independent thinking

And not getting told what to do
If you're not into high taxes
(on the masses to protect the few)
If you have half a brain
If you like making your own decisions
And consider reality as a guide
Then you have to get out of bed
And vote on Tuesday
Unless you can accept …”
So I wrote to the paper
And this is what I said

"Yes I like choices
And not being told what to do
As if I stepped out of a novel set in 1902!
I want a healthy planet (no fracking for me and you)
And health care for all
(yes even the poor have rights to),
Yes I’m into Social Security and Medicare to
And some safety nets for the disadvantaged
And children to.”

So I wait with high hopes
And a sense of dread that instead
I might get –
The demise of Social Security, Medicare
Buried in a coffin marked “Private”,
An uncaring President who wants
Millionaires paying less
And to remove hard won gains
For the less fortunate –

At least if that happens in 4 years
I’ll have the chance to vote
Once again.
